To be honest, I’m anxious. Not because models are so powerful that they might replace me or anything like that, but because the frequent overheating of model servers and the constantly shrinking usage quotas have made me realize that the first round of screening from the new era may already have arrived.
If, in the future, human cognition is fitted with AI as a kind of exoskeleton, then the gap between someone who can use SOTA models and someone who cannot may be widened enormously by nothing more than a single model.
And this is where my anxiety lies. If using a SOTA model costs 100u, most people can probably still afford it—or are willing to pay it. But if the current price is only the subsidized price, then when that price reaches 200u or 400u, for a model that may not necessarily improve one’s life, will most people still be willing to pay such a high price as a necessity of life? This, then, is the first layer of screening: with a simple amount of money, people can be divided into those who can use SOTA models and those who cannot.
Although it feels a bit premature to say this while we are probably still in the main upswing of the AI boom, at this point in time, perhaps this could also be called a habit of looking from the right side of the curve (
As for why I thought of this, it was probably because of mythos. I saw part of its role in the security field, and that probably struck a nerve, making me realize that they are actually not satisfied with only the field of coding.
Then that stimulus made me think back to their work and promotion in the video field, and their attempts in the field of music composition. In fact, they have long since stopped being satisfied with just the field of code. So when an industry moves from promotion into a plateau phase, will the cost of use for users still be as cheap as it is now?
As someone with little capital, I can only be pushed along by the times, feeling my way forward, not knowing whether I am right or wrong. Perhaps that is indeed sad. However, the opportunities of facing a new world are also spread out before everyone equally; perhaps this, too, is a gift from the times.
